Helps: when the same everyday slip keeps recurring and one recent instance can be recalled in detail; chain analysis is clinical craft never tested on its own, though thinking concretely about an episode is linked to less rumination than thinking about it abstractly
Backfires: when the reconstruction drifts from what happened into why this always happens to you, the abstract kind of dwelling linked to rumination and low mood
