Grounding
Helps: when many parts, causes or players relate and the shape is unclear, and every arrow carries a specific verb such as causes, blocks or needs; building concept maps aids retention of studied material, but it is not a substitute for recalling it
Backfires: when vague links like "relates to" stand in for real relations, when a finished map feels like understanding without being checked, when it grows too dense to read back from a photo, or when it replaces retrieval practice, which beat concept mapping as a study method
